Blackjack Strategy

When to hit?

You should hit:

  • On hard 13 to 16 when the dealer’s open card is 7 or higher
  • On hard 12 when the dealer’s open card is lower than 4 or higher than 7
  • On 8 or lower
  • On 9 when the dealer’s open card is not 3, 4, 5 or 6
  • On soft 18 when the dealer’s open card is 9, 10 or ace
  • On soft 17 when the dealer’s open card is not 3 to 6
  • On soft 15 or 16 when the dealer’s open card is not 4 to 6
  • On soft 13 or 14 when the dealer’s open card is not 5 or 6.

When to Double-Down?

You should double down:

  • On 11 when the dealer’s open card is not an ace
  • On 10 when the dealer’s open card is not an ace or a ten point card (K, Q, J or T)
  • On 9 when the dealer’s open card is 3 to 6
  • On soft 17 or 18 when the dealer’s open card is 3 to 6
  • On soft 15 or 16 when the dealer’s open card is 4 to 6
  • On soft 13 or 14 when the dealer’s open card up is 5 or 6

When to Stand? (or Stick as they say in the UK)

You should stand:

  • On hard 17 to 21
  • On hard 13 to 16 when the dealer’s open card is 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6
  • On hard 12 when the dealer’s open card is 4, 5 or 6
  • On soft 19 or 20
  • On soft 18 when the dealer’s open card is 2, 7 or 8

When to Split?

You should split:

  • Pairs of Aces
  • Pairs of Eights

You should NOT split:

  • Pairs of Kings
  • Pairs of Queens
  • Pairs of Jacks
  • Paris of Tens

Blackjack Glossary

  • Soft – your hand contains an Ace that can be counted as both 1 and 11 (without going bust)
  • Hard – your hand doesn’t contain an Ace that can be counted as both 1 and 11 (without going bust)
  • Hit – take another card
  • Double Down – double your original bet
  • Stand (or Stick) – take no more cards
  • Split – split your hand and continue playing with two hands.
